If you don't know who Bethany Mota is, you've been living under a rock. With a YouTube commercial on TV, a growing fashion and beauty collaboration with Aeropostale, and a casual 1.7 million followers on Twitter, she's kind of a big deal at the moment. We sat down with the Portuguese and Mexican star to discuss important things like her rising success and the best mascara ever (apparently it involves faux baby lashes) — read the highlights below and enter to win a bag of Bethany Mota for Aero swag on page 2!
I remember when Aeropostale approached me saying they wanted to create a fragrance I got really really excited because it’s one of those things that I would dream about, but didn’t think would actually ever happen. We did a lot of adding things and taking things away — I was like, ‘this is too sweet or this needs to be stronger’ and I would wear the samples for weeks just to make sure it was perfect.
Do you have any note obsessions that you had to include?
Growing up, I always really loved sweet scents, so there’s a lot of vanilla and "candy shop smells" in it to make it very sweet. At the same time, there’s also a bohemian edgy vibe to it, so there are some darker mustier notes as well, which makes it a little bit more sophisticated I think. They balance out perfectly.
Where do you love to spray perfume — do you have a sneaky application trick?
My viewers actually know about my little routine for spraying perfume. I put it on my wrists and rub them together, then I spray a little bit on my neck and three spritzes in front of me and then I shimmy through them.
What other beauty products you’re loving right now?
Recently I’ve been into double-ended mascara; the kind that has two different purposes — I feel like it does so much more. I love CoverGirl Bombshell and the mascara that has tiny fibers that attach to your real lashes. I’ve also been really into using liquid liner and winging my liner out. I used to never do it because I sucked at it, but I’ve been practicing and I actually got pretty good.
You have Mexican roots — who is your Latina beauty icon?
Selena Gomez. I feel like her hair and makeup always look flawless.
