Curly Qs: My First Straightening Experience

istockphoto.com

I was thirteen when I got my hair straightened for the first time. I wanted a different look for a get-together with my friends from dance class. My mom took me to her local stylist, Silvia, at a salon in Weehawken, New Jersey. She convinced us that a blowout would do the trick. She started blow-drying away as I sat there anxious and scared, not knowing what to expect. It took 40 minutes of intense heat aimed straight at my strands for Silvia to stretch out all of my tight curls. And when I finally looked in the mirror, the result was unrecognizable. It felt like I was looking at a different person, one with straight hair. And I liked it! It was such a treat to run my fingers through smooth strands and feel my hair so soft.

As I walked out of the salon, Silvia handed me a bottle of Biosilk Silk Therapy ($15 for a 5.64 oz., folica.com) to control flyways. And I’ve been using it ever since, even on my curls to add shine. My new style was a hit with my friends and with me! But a few days later it was nice to get my ringlets back. Do you remember the first time you straightened your locks?

The first time that I can recall of ever getting my hair straightened was for the day of my first communion. At the time I was about 9-12 years old. I remember my mother taking me to a local salon and whispering in my ear " te vas a ver preciosa en los fotos". As me and my mother walked into the salon, I wondered what kind of hairdo I was about to get. The stylist I was assigned to was very nice, she was older , probably around 56. She was a bit on the heavy side and she was the type of older women who didn't believe hat any type of clothing can be considered too tight to wear. Moving forward and skipping the hair wash I now was seated on the chair in her post. I remember her combing my very damp and hair and then a pair of scissors appeared in her hand. Snippity snip snip she began cutting my hair, a tragic loss for a little girl because I loved having my hair long. After she was done with cutting my hair she began blow drying it, I hated it due to the fact that at times I felt that she was burning my scalp. Once she was done styling my hair, I looked at my self in the mirror and I was not pleased with what was done to my hair. My bangs were cut wrong, they were not leveled and the fresh hair cut had made my ends thicker then I remembered. I remember that day going to my first communion and feeling miserable, I have the pictures to prove it. So not only was this the first time that I could remember getting my hair straightened out but it was also my first experience in getting a bad hair cut.
The first time i straightened my hair for real, was at my friend's house and i was about 8. Her mom, just with a iron did it, but it left it dry but i was still awed by my look. I showed my dad, who didnt like it all at (i got his hair, really tight ringlets; he's half africain american) and he always has prefered my curly hair to straight hair. Then the second time I did it, it was again at a friends house and i was 11. I liked it alot too, but it was also very dry, Then when i was 13my cousin blow-dried it then ironed it, but stiill dry. iI liked it at taht time too. But its such a hassle to straighten it, casue i have so much hiar!!!! So, i just leave it curly whenever possible. Which is everyday. Straightening happens to dry my hair, and it becomes unmanagble curly. But there was that story!
all i remember is that I couldn't stop running my fingers through my hair
I was 10 when I begged my mom to let me relax my hair...everyone on the playground had straight hair regardless of their color. Since my mom washed and blow dried my hair, I had no idea it was curly. When I realized in college that my hair was curly I decided to wear natural but still get relaxers until one day when the relaxer went bad. The hairdresser asked me before starting if I wanted my hair to still curl after she did my relaxer and I was like, hugh? Needless to say, after I washed my hair and it wouldn't curl and just looked limp I decided to grow my hair out and haven't looked back since. I have finally found someone in Tucson, AZ after moving from New York who understands the importance of a wash and set and a blow out...it's magic for natural hair:)
