Does This Work? Organix Brazilian Keratin Treatment

As part of our 30 days of beauty road testing, our lovely intern, Virginia, tried out a new at-home keratin treatment she found at the drugstore. Read all about it here:

The Product: Organix Ever Straight Brazilian Keratin Therapy 30-Day Smoothing Treatment, $15, ulta.com

The Claim: “Eliminates up to 95% of frizz and curl for up to 30 days, and cuts blow-drying time by 75%.”

My Results: I always wanted to get the Brazilian Keratin treatment done on my super curly hair, but for several reasons (the cost…the whole formaldehyde-causes-cancer news), I’ve never gotten it done. So, I decided to try this at-home smoothing treatment instead. It's just fifteen bucks at any local drugstore and formaldehyde free! (It does rely on a different chemical to straighten the hair. For more info on the dangers of formaldehyde, check out this post.)

I shampooed my hair with a “pre-shampoo” packet that was included with the kit.  Since my hair is really curly I washed it twice as instructed. No conditioner needed.  With the gloves provided, I then combed the serum into my hair and let it sit for 30 minutes.  Then, I blow-dried my hair until it was dry and mostly straight and flat-ironed my hair in small sections. You must use a flat iron that has really high heat to seal the treatment (luckily, the product says it has thermal heat protection!). Finally, I left the treatment in my hair for 48 hours, as instructed.

Overall Score: It hasn’t been a full thirty days, but so far I’d give this 5 out of 5 stars. My hair is is super soft! My curls are super loose! The best part: I can just wash and go or blow dry my hair straight super quickly.
