1. Braided Pompadour

No smooth updos here. The undone effect is this style’s defining characteristic, says L.A.-based celebrity stylist Laly Zambrana, who created these looks. Spritz a sea-salt spray, like Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray ($15, Sephora) on dry, blown-out hair, and then tease the entire crown area. This gives the hair texture and creates wispy pieces along the hairline. Roughly pull hair back and begin tying into a loose fishtail braid, starting at the nape of the neck and going towards the side opposite your part. Pin hair as needed, keeping in mind the messy slept-in texture this style requires. Ensure it all stays in place with a strong-hold styler. Try Catwalk by TIGI Work It Hair Spray ($17, Amazon.com).

2. Old Hollywood Reimagined

Rethink this classic look by adding tons of texture. Start by using a volumizer, like Paul Mitchell Extra Body Daily Boost ($15, Ulta.com), on wet hair and then blow-dry smooth. For even more volume and to add curls, set with rollers. After removing them, back-comb at roots, being careful not to disrupt the curl. The goal is to get volume and highlight the layers. Create a dramatic side part and then pin back and spray hair. This gives the effect of a shaved-head punk style without the commitment. Finish with a light-hold hair spray all over, like L’Oréal Elnett Hairspray ($13, Target.com).

3. Three’s Company

For a more modern take on your childhood moño, try a trio of undone buns. The best part? This can work on any hair texture. Here, Zambrana worked with Ganem’s already blown-out smooth locks. With a bit of Aveda Humectant Brilliant Pomade ($22, aveda.com) in palms, separate hair into three ponytails with horizontal parts. Wrap each section into a bun, leaving the ends out to give it a more distressed look. Keep the hairline smooth by spraying a clean mascara wand with a strong-hold hair spray and combing back flyaways.
