Want frizz-free curls like your favorite chicas in Hollywood? Well, they're actually more attainable than they seem. We spoke with Devachan Senior Stylist, Ana Paula Cota, who gave us the inside scoop on how you can achieve flawless rizos without adding an extra hour to your am beauty routine.
1. Adrienne Bailon
How do celebs like Adrienne Bailon keep their curls frizz-free on the red carpet?
They hire 5 stylists for that day!!! I do believe there is a “magic” amount of product, where it’s just enough to make sure it will endure hot lights from cameras and/or a humid day—all without looking too product-heavy. Pro Tip: For those humid days (especially long days from work to an evening out), I use a bit of DevaCurl Super Cream on dry hair. It just makes me feel safe since it’s so hydrating and I know it will have lasting power.
2. Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey has a really full and bouncy curl pattern; how can I get a consistent look like hers?
Mariah is one of those lucky women with a great head of hair and a consistent curl pattern. If your hair has more than one curl pattern (and most of us curly girls do!), the right haircut is critical. When lazy or uncooperative curls need a little encouragement, try wrapping small sections around a finger, spritz with DevaCurl Spray Gel and clip for 10 minutes. After hair is styled, I also suggest applying a light amount of DevaCurl SuperCream to protect and control the curls.
3. Salma Hayek
How can I get healthy-looking, shiny waves like Salma Hayek's?
The right product is key. Very often, conditioners and stylers are full of silicones, which I recommend avoiding since they weigh the hair down and make it appear dry or dull. Once you find the right silicone-free products, you will notice how the hair responds – more bounce and more shine! Another very important tip is to really leave hair alone as it dries so the real moisture locks in. If your texture is wavy, I love the feeling of a small amount of DevaCurl One Condition Decadence left on soaking wet hair applied right before leaving the shower, and then using the DevaTowel or cotton t-shirt to scrunch dry.
4. Christina Milian
I dye my hair often — how can I prevent my curls from looking damaged and color-treated?
This is a combined effort between you and your colorist. Your colorist should know how far they can lift your color without damaging hair and then you need to be responsible for choosing the right products and creating a healthy daily routine including a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser. I tell my clients to use a nourishing conditioner like DevaCurl One Condition Decadence every single day for the week after a color service. It really works!
How can I achieve that just-rolled-out-of-bed-look with my curls and have them still look great?
I wish we had a real picture of Shakira from when she wakes up! I am sure she looks great, but that look doesn’t just happen. There are a couple of things to consider. First, create a consistent, healthy hair routine. The more consistent you are, the more consistent your curls will behave. The approach should be simple: Cleanse gently with a sulfate free cleanser such as DevaCurl No-Poo Decadence; hydrate accordingly with a silicone-free conditioner like DevaCurl One Condition Decadence; style and protect with the right product for your texture. The secret to waking up “Bella” is to have a successful first day. Then it’s all about having the right attitude! I’m seeing more and more curly girls who appreciate a little frizz and enjoy their second or even third day hair better than the first day.
