Love your rizos? Well, it's time you took care of them — properly. We got the scoop from YouTube personality and beauty vlogger Alba Garcia of SunKissAlba to you the 411 on keeping those curls looking gorgeous.
1. 1. Cleanse hair with cold water instead of hot water:
Hot water adds more frizz and causes dryness and breakage, making hair more fragile.
Cold water adds shine by sealing in moisture and preventing frizz.
2. 2. Use a microfiber towel or a t-shirt to dry your hair:
Cotton Towels are not as gentle to your hair compared to microfiber towels. Cotton towels can over-dry hair and add more frizz. You can buy a microfiber towel at your local pharmacy or beauty store, or simply use a t-shirt to wrap or dry your hair and it will lessen dryness, breakage, and frizz during your drying and styling process.
3. 3. Deep condition frequently:
Deep conditioning treatments help strengthen your hair by adding nutrients and vitamins lost, but depending on your hair type and your hair problem, you may deep condition any time from once a week to once a month. I like to combine my SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil deep conditioning treatment with an oil; the deep conditioning treatment can also be used alone, as is (also found on amazon.com).
4. 4. Protect your ends:
My ends get dryer during the cold winter months, so I protect my ends in a simple and quick way with minimal change to my routine; I simply add a small amount of oil to my ends while it’s wet after cleansing my hair in the shower. I like to use Avocado or Coconut oil to hydrate and prevent my ends from splitting. After applying the oil on my ends, I continue to style my hair as usual with my products of choice.
5. 5. Perfect and define your curls without using heat:
Once in a while when I want a more defined and perfected curl, I do the "Twirl Method" where I simply take small sections of my hair after applying my products and I twirl my hair forward with my finger to create the curl shape. After I’ve twirled all the sections, I allow my hair to completely air dry before separating each curl with my fingers. By not touching my hair during the air-drying process, it dries in the perfect curl shape without manipulation or adding frizz. The results are flawless and professional!
