Welcome to the Digital Age, Baby

Kids today have a huge selection of high tech toys; Dessa already has several toy cell phones, a Disney laptop and her own kiddie digital camera. It's hard to keep her away from tech toys because she wants all the things she sees her parents using. We don't spend the entire day on the computer or on our cell phones but we spend enough time on them that she wants to imitate what we do.
Come this summer Dessa will have a leg up on us. Leap Frog has just unveiled a new Baby Blackberry. Since Jeremy and I are still in the Dark Ages with plain old cell phones, Dessa will be the first in our household to have a snazzy new smartphone. According to the info Leap Frog released, the Baby Blackberry offers a variety of educational games and allows kids the capability to send text messages (just to themselves but still a neat feature). It's geared towards kids a bit older than Dessa but I never follow the age guidelines; if it has buttons, lights up and makes noise then Dessa will definitely be entertained.
When I first saw the Baby Blackberry, I thought it was pretty ridiculous. OK, I'll be honest I thought it was downright dumb. Then I showed Jeremy, who thought it was the coolest thing in the world and somehow managed to convince me that Dessa needs one. Sometimes I get torn between wanting to get her all the high tech gadgets and wanting to keep her focused on non-tech stuff. But I realize there's no shielding her from technology; it's everywhere she turns. So, this summer Dessa will be the first in our house with her own Blackberry and maybe soon, mami and papi will catch up with the times and get their own!

I think that everything in moderation is good. I think it's good for her to have some high tech toys. The times in which she is growing are so technoligically advanced and exposure to toys that imitate adult items like blackberrys sounds great! It is also good to give them the old fashioned toys that don't light up or make noise. That way they will continue to be inspired to use their imaginations!
