Herve Leger by Max Azria Spring 2013

At first glance, the Spring 2013 Hervé Léger by Max Azria brought one thing to mind: bondage. You know -- kinky, 50 Shades of Grey-inspired pieces -- due to the strappy high heel platforms, the leather belts, and sexy cut-out swimsuits. On second glance, however, it’s a bit more complex than that.

Lubov Azria, wife of Max and creative director of BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP, tells Style.com that the Spring collection was actually inspired by the quilts of “Gee's Bend, a rural community in Alabama whose women have developed a distinct style of traditional patchworking over the past two centuries,” which explains the gemotirc patterns and the textile trimming seen throughout the looks. The pattern itself is quite intricate, forming diamond shapes on the mini-dresses.

The hair, by Laurent Philippon, is just as sharp as the collection featuring a braid harness, taking its cue from the bandage dresses: very pure and simple lines.

“It’s very simple but also has a couture detail on the side,” Philippon says. “One side is cornrowed and the braid is going over the hair.” He added that the hair is similar to the leather pieces in the show.

“[The hair] is really complimentary to the clothes,” Philippon says.
