Mission Muralismo

I’ve never been to San Francisco. It’s always been at the top of my list of places to visit in the U.S., along with Santa Fe. Plus, I’ve got a couple of good friends out there. But the real reason I want to go now is a new coffee table book from Abrams titled Street Art San Francisco: Mission Muralismo, which pays homage to more than three decades of street art in S.F.’s Mission district combining elements such as Mexican mural painting, graffiti, pop art, surrealism, and urban punk with outside forces like politics, giving shape and color to a district unlike any other in the U.S. and the world.

Carlos Santana, a long-time muralismo aficionado, wrote the foreword, which is more like a love letter to the city that nurtured his immense talent. Over 600 photographs depict the history of this fascinating street art movement. In terms of artists, the list is incredibly diverse—from Brazil’s Os Gemeos to Chicana legends Las Mujeres Muralistas. I only hope to experience the Mission in person soon.
