The holidays are here! For many, that includes an annual trip to the mall to tackle their Christmas shopping. To-do list in hand, you head out the door early, but the mall is already jam packed. You can’t find a parking spot, and by the time you purchase your first few gifts, you're already famished.
Healthy eating on an all-day shopping trip can be a challenge — especially if you aren't prepared. Glistening fries, greasy chicken wings, westernized Chinese food, and fast food burgers are sometimes the only options available. By failing to plan, you are planning to fail.
Follow these easy tips, and stay on track this holiday season:
1. Pack your own snacks or small meals.
Pack portable snacks inside your purse at home: a few ziplock bags with trail mix, cashews, or almonds, a juicy green apple with a sprinkle of cinnamon, or a few tangy tangerines.
2. Always bring your water bottle.
Often we mistake hunger for dehydration, so pack a water bottle to keep your thirst at bay.
3. Be creative.
You may have more options around you than you think. You’d be amazed by what you can find at local drugstores, like 7-11, CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid or Duane Reade. Most of these stores sell hummus packs, fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, trail mix, protein bars or turkey sandwiches.
Have a great holiday, and snack with your health in mind!
