Calle 13, Maxwell Celebrate Grammy Wins
“Nos ganamos el Grammy gringo!” announced Calle 13 on the group’s Twitter page hours before the Grammy Awards aired yesterday. The Puerto Ricans walked away with the trophy for (the all-encompassing category) Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album for their album Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo at the non-telecast portion of the ceremony. No big surprise there as the duo swept the 2009 Latin Grammy Awards last year with the same globally aware disc.
Also victorious was Maxwell. The Puerto-Rican Haitian crooner picked up his first Grammys: Best R&B Album for BLACKksummers’ Night and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the ballad “Pretty Wings.” Maxwell, who was M.I.A. for eight years before releasing the winning album, recently told NPR.org why he makes music. “I’m supposed to love what I do, I’m supposed to have meaning behind it, [and] I think success will come from that only.”
Here’s his soulful duet with icon Robert Flack from last night’s show. The pair performed “Where is the Love,” and I think we can all agree it’s a success:
