The only things that are certain in this world are death, taxes and the yearly Freestyle Extravaganza at Madison Square Garden. The sonic flashback, which takes place on June 20 this year, gathers all the usual suspects, acts like TKA, the Cover Girls and Coro, for a massive party that wouldn’t be what it is if not for Lisa Velez, aka Lisa Lisa.

The native New Yorker was (and is) the reigning queen of Latin hip-hop. I for one still know the words to songs like “I Wonder if I Take You Home,” “Can You Feel the Beat” and “All Cried Out,” which were featured on the singer’s 1985 debut album Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force.

Flash-forward more than 20 years and Lisa Lisa is back with new material. She’s older, wiser and more in tune with herself in Life ‘N Love, which won’t be out till July 14 but we have a preview for you. Have a listen here to “Infatuation” from the upcoming album and let me know what you think.

And if you still prefer tracks like “Head to Toe” and “Lost In Emotion,” there’s still time to get tickets for the show at the Garden, where she will no doubt indulge any residual nostalgia.
