Guitar Heroes Rodrigo y Gabriela Rock It Hard
Guitar Heroes Rodrigo y Gabriela Rock It Hard
Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela came out of seemingly nowhere in 2006 with a self-titled EP featuring a flamenco-infused rendition of the Led Zeppelin classic “Stairway to Heaven” and an unusual story about how they went from being in a thrash band in El DF to busking in Dublin—they even had the Mexican-Irish accents to prove it. And though they could’ve been pegged as a novelty act, the headbanging pair quickly proved to be accomplished musicians while delivering rapid-fire acoustic rhythms capable of transforming even the most demure listener into a born-again metalhead.
Their highly anticipated next album, 11:11 (out Sept. 8), which was produced in Ixtapa, features 11 original tracks paying tribute to 11 artists (past and present) who have inspired the duo. Mexican guitarist Carlos Santana, Argentine bandoneon master Astor Piazzola and Spanish guitar legend Paco de Lucia are among the influences. If you simply can’t wait for the record to drop, here’s a preview of “Buster Voodoo,” an ode to Jimi Hendrix that will have you in a hard-rock haze.
