Q&A: Pacha Massive Continue to Spread Good Vibes

It’s been over a month since Bronx-based collective Pacha Massive released their sophomore record, If You Want It. I spoke to Dominican-born founder and producer Ramon Nova to find out just how much his life has changed since the success of his first album, All Good Things, and if, as he once said, he still spends his days just sleeping, eating and dreaming music:
How did your life change after the first album?
What changed were my thoughts on music when it started reaching the masses. Like a painting, no matter what the artist intended, everyone will derive their own meaning. So rather than being explicit, I try to capture positive vibrations which translate without a problem.
Your second album came out in September. How was the experience of making it different from the first one?
Not too different. This album had many collaborations—like the first one—with artists from east to west and south of the border. I usually play most of the instruments except for the horns, which are played by Vince Veloso and Moist Paula.
What's your favorite song on the album and why?
I have a few: Some deal with the drive to move forward like “If You Want It;” some deal with relationships like “Just Want To See Ya” and “Take The Wheel.” Some with an experience like “Pacha Llego,” which was inspired by spending New Years in the Caribbean and watching the sun rise over the ocean on Jan. 1.
How do you choose your collaborators?
Some people I keep an eye on for a bit and some may be suggested. Whatever the case, we have to vibe and freely exchange ideas without thinking too much.
I interviewed you two years ago and you said that you sleep, eat and dream music, is that still the case?
Always! I actually have come up with a couple of songs during my sleep recently.
When is the tour?
Right now, our agent is working out performing dates for the remainder of 2009 and 2010. And this year, we're finally going to the Dominican Republic!
