Wilmer Valderrama has been playing lovable characters on the small screen since before it was officially cool to be a Latino in Hollywood. Yes, he may be the subject of tabloid fodder thanks to his love life and fellow celebrity friends. But more importantly, Wilmer has been collaborating on projects by Latinos for the benefit and enjoyment of everyone for years.
We caught up with the Venezuelan multi-hyphenate at the COVERGIRL and Tide Style Lounge during the 37th Annual Calle Ocho Music Festival in Miami, Florida this weekend to help celebrate the most stylish, confident members of the local community and hand-select the COVERGIRL and Tide 2014 Style Mavens of Calle Ocho! The 34-year-old couldn’t help but smile as he surprised fans while taking in the sounds of salsa, merengue, and bachata. He’s also on a promotional tour in support of his new series, From Dusk Till Dawn, premiering on El Rey Network on March 11th at 9pm.
What brings you to Calle Ocho?
“Calle Ocho brings me to Calle Ocho. I’ve been living in Los Angeles for a long time and I love and appreciate the Mexican community. But sometimes, I truly miss my tropical roots. When I come out here to Miami it makes me feel at home. Coming to Calle Ocho you have to walk down the streets to get some areas and pinchos. These are some of the main reasons I love coming here to celebrate. I’m happy to be sharing the stage today with COVERGIRL and Tide to select style winners who are best representing their countries and Latinos the best at the festival.”
Speaking of fashion, you’re always one of our favorites on the red carpet. Can you share some of your tips for getting red carpet ready?
“Be comfortable! Keep in mind that what you put on, you might be wearing for many hours. If you feel comfortable, then the rest is easy. I like playing with different looks by putting together by playing with cuts, and colors to make new combinations.
My sisters are straight up COVERGIRL’s. They understand what it takes to get ready and how to really glam it up. Seeing them while I was growing up and putting their looks together was awesome. My father was also the same way. He still wears a three piece suit just to get on an airplane! He wants to make sure that he is always looking his best. That’s what it was like growing up with my family, so I knew that I’d be able to figure this whole style thing out.”
