Christy Turlington: "I’m definitely due for a trip back to El Salvador"

Supermodel Christy Turlington was recently named the face of Avon’s latest fragrance, Step Into Sexy, a floral-oriental with notes of violet, orchid, rosewood, and amber ($28, available through Avon representatives or at avon.com in November).

To celebrate the collaboration, Avon donated $10,000 to Christy’s charity, Every Mother Counts. “At Avon, beauty means finding a great new fragrance like Step Into Sexy, but it also means championing economic empowerment and improving the lives of women around the world,” says Lily Destefano, Avon’s Vice President of Marketing, North America Beauty. “It’s very special to work with someone like Christy who shares our Avon values.”

When we chatted with half-Salvadoran Turlington she reiterated her passion for activism, referencing her trip to Guatemala for her documentary No Woman, No Cry, which examined child and maternal health around the world.

“I would have loved to film in El Salvador, but it’s policy was too strict,” she explained. “I’m definitely due for a trip back to El Salvador. I brought my daughter [Grace] with me two years ago. She has so many cousins there that it was great for her to make a connection with them. It’s magical to see that your relationship to the world is so much broader than you realized. Now my son [Finn] is next!”

Besides planning trips to El Salvador, the 42-year-old mom fits in beauty rituals while spending time with her family. “My kids take baths every night, and it’s something we sometimes do together, too. I rarely have time to indulge in a bath myself, although I took one the other night because I’m training for the marathon,” Turlington says. “Otherwise, we have a yoga room at home and sometimes practice yoga together. They naturally know the poses and can just do anything. They can do the most difficult things that have taken me 25 years to master!”
