Calle 13 rapper René Pérez Joglar's uncle, Roberto Joglar Rios (aka Tito), was shot to death in Puerto Rico on Thursday night. According to reports, the 49-year-old was murdered in front of a school in the island’s capital of San Juan. As of now, the perpetrator of the crime has not been identified, but the case is being investigated by the city's law enforcement.
The 34-year-old rapper, who uses social injustices and human rights as muses for hit albums including, Los De Atrás Vienen Conmigo, posted on Twitter, “I join with my family in the great loss of our dear uncle Tito. He was the victim of a crime wave that exists in Puerto Rico.”
Puerto Rico has been suffering from a violence epidemic largely due to drug crimes, gangs, low unemployment rates, and corruption within the justice system. A report published by The New York Times claims that there were 525 murders in the island back in 2011. Puerto Rico has an estimated population of about 4 million, and the homicide rate continues to increase.
The Department of Justice has been investigating the commonwealth’s police force since 2008 in an effort to curb the high crime rates.
Our condolences go out to Residente and his family.
What do you think about the high crime rates in Puerto Rico? What should be done to establish security in the island?
