Though in the December, the former Disney Channel first spoke about being sexually assaulted, she had never elaborated on the incident. That is until an Instagram photo posted on Sunday, where Thorne opened up about her experiences with past sexual abuse as a child while standing in solidarity with the #TimesUp movement.

"I was sexually abused and physically growing up from the day I can remember till I was 14..when I finally had the courage to lock my door at night and sit by it. All damn night. Waiting for someone to take advantage of my life again. Over and over I waited for it to stop and finally it did. But some of us aren't as lucky to get out alive. Please today stand up for every soul Mistreated. #timesup," the 20-year-old wrote.

However, we weren't the only ones caught by surprise with the revelation. Following her Instagram post, Thorne's mother, Tamara Thorne, told DailyMail she was unaware that her daughter was being sexually abused under her roof. "It’s a private family matter and I only just found out now," the 46-year-old told the news outlet. "I’m just talking to a therapist about it. I’m processing it - it’s not something I knew about before."

She emphasized, "I hadn't heard about it before. I want to talk to my therapist first about it. I'm actually going to see a therapist, a psychologist about it."

According to DailyMail, a friend close to the family has confirmed that the mother and daughter have both talked about the incident but are not ready to talk about it. "I'm really sorry but she's not ready to address this yet," the source said.

Since opening up about being sexually abused, fans have flooded the Cuban-American beauty with messages of love. "Horrified by your story. I’m happy that you were brave enough to overcome it and move forward and become the beautiful inspiring woman you are today," one fan wrote.

On Monday, a grateful Thorne took to Instagram stories to thank everyone, while encouraging others with similar stories to "stay strong."

"On Twitter I'm reading about all the people sharing their sexual abuse stories with me, from mine, and I just wanna say, I'm really proud of all you guys. It's such a... I'm really proud. Stay strong. Peace, I love you guys," she told fans.
