EXCLUSIVE: Alana De La Garza on Shedding Her Post-Baby Weight

Actress Alana de la Garza gave birth to her first child on September 28, an adorable 9 lbs, 3 oz baby boy named Kieran Thomas Roberts.

At the time, de la Garza, who is best known for her role as A.D.A Connie Rubirosa on the original Law & Order, gushed about her newborn to Latina.com: “He is here! I’m in love!”

A little over a month later, Alana, 34, is still completely smitten with Kieran. Over the weekend, the Mexican actress told us, "Kieran is growing so big already!" But like most new moms, de la Garza is dealing with the downside of having a baby—trying to get back in shape after the pregnancy. Here’s what she had to say about struggling to lose those last few pounds:

It's been almost two months since you had Kieran. How are you dealing with your post-baby weight?

At first you lose a ton of water weight and that feels great. You think, "Oh, don't I have nice ankles?' Or 'Wow, I feel so thin!' Then you look in the mirror and say, 'What is that little layer around my waist?' UGH! In short, the way I'm dealing with it is full-fledged battle!

Has that been an issue for you?

The only issue I have with it is that it needs to leave my body. I think women are too hard on themselves. I have 12 more pounds to lose and I'll have to work for it. Unfortunately, I had to have a C-section, which meant six full weeks of healing and no working out. Now I have hit the six-week mark and can start my battle with the extra weight. My method? I chase my husband around the neighborhood as he sits in the back of a pickup truck, holding a fishing pole with an ice cream sandwich dangling seductively from it. I'm joking…It's actually a cheeseburger!

What kinds of things are you really doing to get back in shape?

I'm doing 45 minutes of cardio and another 30 of Pilates every other day. I also enjoy taking brisk walks with Kieran before the sun goes down. It's the only way I have found that works to combat the chub, especially because I'd like to drop the weight faster. I'm also breastfeeding, which is a wonderful way to bond with my son and burn some extra calories.

Is it going to be especially hard for you to lose weight during the holiday eating season?

YES! I love food! Especially holiday food, like green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, biscuits and pie. Yummy. And the thing is if I eat too much of anything the chub won't come off. Sadly, that means a little struggle through the holidays—but Kieran is so worth it!

How do you plan to celebrate Kieran's first Thanksgiving?
His first Thanksgiving will be a relaxed day at home with friends and family. His daddy and Uncle JT will be cooking their annual Thanksgiving feast. It rocks!
