The Hip Hop Divorce of the Century Gets Ugly
The Hip Hop Divorce of the Century Gets Ugly
If it's drama you're after, look no further than the divorce between hip hop legend Nas and pop chanteuse Kelis. Last we heard, Kelis was crying poverty and demanding that estranged hubby, Nas, pay spousal and child support as well as all legal expenses. Nas coldly declined, telling her to, “Pay her own damn way.”
Now, Nas is out to disprove allegations made by Kelis that he is rolling in money, but unwilling to share. Kelis is claiming that Nas made $11 million off of his most recent album deal. Nas fired back in legal papers saying, “I did not receive even half that amount,” asserting it was more like $4 million. Nas says his income is declining, and that he's only bringing in $147,165 a month. Once you take into account his expenses—almost $75,000 per month, including $10,000 for clothing, toiletries and personal effects—that $150 grand is already half gone.
Kelis, who will give birth to the couple's first child any day now, said Nas hasn’t thrown a dime her way since he left her. The rapper argues that he’s agreed to dish out some dough to help cover expenses for their future child: $350 for a stroller, $450 for a baby sling and $1,598 for two cribs. Nas also thinks $5,000 a month in child support is reasonable since the baby will just be a newborn. But Kelis thinks that Nas should pay child and spousal in an amount that will allow her to maintain the standard of living to which she has grown accustomed.
Tell us: Do you think Kelis is being too greedy or is Nas just being stingy?
