Latina.com Exclusive: Daddy Yankee Explains Why He Supports John McCain

Retna Ltd.

Amigo de Obama? Not Daddy Yankee. The reggaetonero has confirmed that come election day, his vote will be for Republican candidate John McCain. Latina.com spoke exclusively to Daddy Yankee to understand why he decided to vote Republican this November while most celebrities seem downright fanatic about Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

The Puerto Rican native says the Senator made an impression on him the first time they met, at an event nearly two years ago: "I thought he was a really cool person, and this was way before he was even a presidential candidate, and I liked him a lot."

The unlikely partners reconnected last month when they were both in New York. "He invited me [to Washington] and I went," says Yankee. "We talked about boxing, we're both boxing fanatics."

It was McCain's down-to-earth nature that appealed to him the most. He explains, "the cool thing about McCain is that the same guy that was senator is the same guy who is running for president now. When I talked to him, I never felt beneath him, he looks directly at me when he’s speaking to me, and we have the same level of respect for each other."

But it was the stories McCain told him of his time on the battlefield that really struck a chord with the musician. "He said, 'Yankee, I was a soldier. And I saw people die next to me, Latinos who never got their citizenship but who were willing to die for this country. I saw a Hernandez, I saw a Rodriguez, how they killed them.' And that broke my heart hearing that. And I went, man, this guy lived it. He’s not just going, 'hey I want your vote.' He lived it."

Does it bother him that McCain doesn't speak a word of Spanish? "No, no. He has this great desire to help our people. People don't know this but since he was a senator, he has fought hard for the well-being of Latinos. I know we are dealing with someone who cares about the Latino community."

"I was surprised I have to say at how willing to listen he is," Yankee explains. "People who haven’t met him might get the wrong perception of him but he's totally different."

When we asked if he had plans to meet with Democratic candidate Barack Obama, Yankee responded with a curt, "No."

If Daddy Yankees influence within the Latino community is any indication, looks like John McCain's bid for the White House just got a major bump.

Tell us, does Daddy Yankee's endorsement of McCain affect your decision?

Reponse to phatjoe167's comment: Unfortunately the American Dream is not real for most of the people here in the United State's. It is an idealized notion that the US government has falsely portrayed in a effort to lure cheap labor (immigrants) into the United States. Unfortunately not everyone can have the big house with the white picket fence, the summer home, cars & middle class lifestyle, why? cause its damn hard! I know 1st hand, being a 1st generation what its like. My family immigrated to NYC from Dominican Republic in the 80's with the notion of the "American Dream". However, my family didn't possess higher education degrees, didn't speak english, we evidently looked like foreigners and we were highly discriminated by whites and blacks alike who felt like they had an upper hand on us.In reference to your comment about loans, grants,& scholarships. Im a working college student with a single parent, & let me tell you that they don't give those out very easily,no matter how good of a student you are. & While Bush has been president my loan interest rates have done nothing but skyrocket and funding for my school has but cut. Therefore how can a community of people or ethincs move upwards in this country when the guys in power are cutting us off or making it impossible to move up? Now I'am not saying that Obama is going to solve all of our problems, porque cualquier politico es un ladron, even in US, but given the Republican repetoire with Latinos and the sky rocketing price of living, I'am up for a fresh start and something a little different cause things are only getting good for the mega rich Y el diablo se esta llevado a los pobres.
Like Obama said in his speech last night, "It's not that John McCain doesn't care, it's that he just doesn't get it." Apparently, neither does Daddy Yankee.
Venus - Thanks for your sharing your educated opinion and speaking of the medias role in providing factual information or lack thereof to Americans. DianaV - You say that we should not pass on lies as truth. Please Ms. DianaV do not pass your ideas as fact. FACT: The Obamas vacationed at the private Hawaiian estate of a billionaire supporter. Ergo, his property is on the beach, his private beach. FACT: You seemed pround to report the Obamas recently finished paying off their student loans in their late 40's. Mr. Obama earned $4M as the result of his book sales over the course of 3 years. Mrs. Obama earns over $300,000 a year, for the past several year. Surely they could have paid off these loans long ago. Especially since there were funds available to finance real estate transactions with Tony Resko. Speaking of Mrs. Obama's position at an university hospital, are you aware this same facility is under federal investigation for turning away uninsured patients? I bring this up because according to your earlier arguements, Mr. Obama is more in touch with the lower-income, minority community which, statistically, is less likely to have medical coverage. I do not see how that represents the plight of Latinos and other minorities. ReynamexicANA 12 - you state Mr. McCain has done nothing for the Latino community. Haven't you read about the McCain-Kennedy bill? In short, it was a bill proposal that would have granted undocumented individuals in America amnesty. I think this says a lot of his commitment to the interests of Latino community, especially since this could have kept undocumented Latino families together here in the USA. By the way, this bill was supported by George W. Bush but unfortunately never made it to the Senate floor for a vote. Mr. McCain did then, and does now, support the Latino Community. I am not here to convince you to vote for McCain or Obama. I am merely trying to show my fellow latinos to educated yourself, do your research and take part in electing on next President based on FACTS not the media or which celebrity is preforming at the conventions. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. YOUR VOTE DOES COUNT. MAKE YOURSELVES HEARD.
Latina’s obvious liberal slant is all over the place in their article on their other internet page where they discuss Daddy Yankee performing at the Republican convention. They state that this is the one reason they should tune into the Republican National Convention. Can Latina be any more obvious? Also, their assessment that Daddy Yankee is one of the few celebrities that is voting for McCain is way off base. There are many celebrities that are with McCain or are conservatives. Angie Harmon, Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, Bruce Willis, just to name a few. The thing is they are not as outspoken as their liberal celebrity counterparts or given as much airtime because of the media’s liberal bias. I don’t feel celebrity endorsements are important, but it is important to educate ourselves on the issues, history, and foreign policy BEFORE casting a vote. And while I love Latina Magazine their obvious love for Obama and Liberals/Democrats is apparent in their magazine. I have found numerous instances where I have considered canceling my subscription because of articles/comments that are obviously liberal. This latest one on their other page is the icing on the cake. Not all Latinos are liberals/democrats. Many are conservative and independent. Again, voting because you think a guy is nice or Obama is young and hip is wrong. Again, people need to educate themselves on history, foreign policy, and the issues before they cast a ballot. Also, magazines, such as Latina, should try to keep their obvious liberal bias out of their magazine. http://www.latina.com/comment/reply/4544
First and foremost, let's address the arguement regarding accessiblity to a higher education. Every child in the United States of America has access to an education via the public school system. Your success is determined by your commitment to educate yourself. You do well, you succeed. Doors are now opened via sholorships, grants and loans. Growing up in the Highbridge section of The Bronx, I saw too often a focus on material items and little investment in one's future. While I studied and held a full time job to help out my family, I saw too many of my friends focus on rope chains, cars, drugs, jewelry, clothes and regular manicures, the focus was to look chuci. To say that education is soley accessible to the white man, is to show ignorance and to further perpetrate stereotypes. The American Dream is for all of us. YOU just have to believe you are worth it. The schools Team Obama have attended is not an education but a indoctrination. A poll taken one year ago shows 94% of college professors are democrat, 4% are republican and 2% are other. This can lead to some people being influenced to view the world though someone else's eyes, at a time when you should be developing your own opinions. As to the comments regarding Daddy Yankee and his music being old, so be it. Focus on the election facts and not on the lastest spins on MTV. Mr. McCain is neither a billionaire nor a millionaire. Do not hate the fact that he not only married well but wisely invested his earnings. Mr. Barak's campaign platform has focused on "change". From the start of his presidential bid he's done that: "Change" his stance on the issues as he sees fit. For example, initially he rallied to pull out troops from Iraq immediately. But now, he's "changed" his stance to allow for our to military to complete their mission. Approximately 2 months ago Mr. Barak voted to fund the troops. That is quite a "change" from his vote two years ago to limit funding of our military and he did not support the surge. Also, during the start of his presidental campain, Mr. Barak vowed to not drill in America. Now, he considering it. How can a Leader of our Country not agree to reduce our dependancy on foriegn oil? That in and of itself is not change. That is pure recklessness. As a low-middle income voter, I am dreading the rising cost of fuel to get to work and heat my home. How can you claim he "gets" the little people. This unfortunately has been a contest to vote for the one with the complexion that comes closest to matching the Latino community, the "minorities", the under-represented, and under-privelaged. Have we forgotten Latinos come in all shades, all backgrounds and all economic levels? It is unfortunate the majority of comments on this board focus on "Rich White Men", the "Minority" community, and Daddy Yankee's popularity. Funny how I have not seen any reference to Mr. Barak's connection to his fellow co-chairman William Aires. Let's talk about that.
¿Que interesante? Ok so he can conversate with McCain but not give Obama a chance. What is up with that? At least met the other candidate and conversate. . who knows what one may find out. Unless there is some strange reason not to want to met Obama in the first place. If I could met them both I would. Just to get some type of connection with them both. Give Obama a chance Daddy Yankee.
Okay maybe some like to hear what "stars" think but who lets a celebrity endorsement of a certain candidate effect their opinion? Nobody in their right mind that is for sure.
'Dique "un great desire to help our community".. How like Bush has done? Through inflation, raising the overall cost of living and sending more of our men and women to go and get killed in a senseless war. Yea for Daddy its very easy to say he can support McCain cause he doesn't have to struggle daily to make ends meet or to afford a higher education, and even though Obama maybe rich as well im pretty sure that as part of the minority community he has had to struggle excessively to get to the place where he is, so most likely he can relate to the struggle many minorities have to endure, compared to a white rich man who can attain wealth much easier just because of the way he looks and his background. Sorry Daddy pero tu 'ta equivocado and outta touch with what you consider your community if you think a billionaire republican has my well-being in mind, given his party's reputation and practices with our gente '
ehh PR is not even able to VOTE in the presidential election LOL. so WTF ! Daddy Yankee is a sell out.. His music sucks anyways.. he is yesterdays news! He does not represent boriquas. Way to go McCain good choice choosing Daddy Yankee.. oh YEAH ! Thumbs up! Really makes me wanna vote for you ! EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVEN'T DONE MIERDA FOR THE LATINO COMMUNITY!
ALSO: Picking your vote based solely on "THIS GUY IS A NICE GUY! I MET HIM PERSONALLY" is SO IMMATURE! ANYBODY can be a nice person when you meet them face to face! ESPECIALLY POLITICIANS! You vote for a president BASED ON WHAT THEY OFFER POLITICALLY, NOT based on how nice they were when you shook his hand. This is really stupid on DY's part, especially when he said h won't even give Obama the "chance" to meet each other. Tîpico caco.
