Latina.com Exclusive: Daddy Yankee Explains Why He Supports John McCain

Retna Ltd.

Amigo de Obama? Not Daddy Yankee. The reggaetonero has confirmed that come election day, his vote will be for Republican candidate John McCain. Latina.com spoke exclusively to Daddy Yankee to understand why he decided to vote Republican this November while most celebrities seem downright fanatic about Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

The Puerto Rican native says the Senator made an impression on him the first time they met, at an event nearly two years ago: "I thought he was a really cool person, and this was way before he was even a presidential candidate, and I liked him a lot."

The unlikely partners reconnected last month when they were both in New York. "He invited me [to Washington] and I went," says Yankee. "We talked about boxing, we're both boxing fanatics."

It was McCain's down-to-earth nature that appealed to him the most. He explains, "the cool thing about McCain is that the same guy that was senator is the same guy who is running for president now. When I talked to him, I never felt beneath him, he looks directly at me when he’s speaking to me, and we have the same level of respect for each other."

But it was the stories McCain told him of his time on the battlefield that really struck a chord with the musician. "He said, 'Yankee, I was a soldier. And I saw people die next to me, Latinos who never got their citizenship but who were willing to die for this country. I saw a Hernandez, I saw a Rodriguez, how they killed them.' And that broke my heart hearing that. And I went, man, this guy lived it. He’s not just going, 'hey I want your vote.' He lived it."

Does it bother him that McCain doesn't speak a word of Spanish? "No, no. He has this great desire to help our people. People don't know this but since he was a senator, he has fought hard for the well-being of Latinos. I know we are dealing with someone who cares about the Latino community."

"I was surprised I have to say at how willing to listen he is," Yankee explains. "People who haven’t met him might get the wrong perception of him but he's totally different."

When we asked if he had plans to meet with Democratic candidate Barack Obama, Yankee responded with a curt, "No."

If Daddy Yankees influence within the Latino community is any indication, looks like John McCain's bid for the White House just got a major bump.

Tell us, does Daddy Yankee's endorsement of McCain affect your decision?

HE FELT LIKE MCCain never looked down on him and spoke to him as an equal?? Well...DHU!! BOTH of them are freakin' MILLIONAIRES that own several houses! DY is so freaking clueless and like most boricuas in PR of "old school" vote for the same crap that their families have voted for generations just out of custom, not because they THINK THEIR CHoices. Yankee...QUEDATE CALLAO'!
There is nothing like the entire truth. It is common knowledge that McCain and his wife,Cindy, have a pre-nup and separate bank accounts. It is no lie that he left his first wife but she stated it was not because of her injuries. McCain cheated and moved on to marry the woman he loved. I would have to say that being in a loveless marriage is also painful. Although there is no "right" here I cannot stand biased opinions that people have in other peoople's personal events. My motto is that it is between the sinner and God. It still bothers me about the sick sex events that happened in the White House so my second motto is "Nobody can talk". Bad stuff happens and people get hurt. We all make some terrible errors in judegement and we all hurt people we love. Stick to the issues and stop the gossip and crude remarks. Maybe a real person is what we need rather than all the sugar coating and fantasy the DEMS give out. AS for Diana's comments, how can McCain be a mirror image of Bush if there are problems he does not always agree with the Rep Party? Bringing up the devil is another problem with her post. Be more constructive and better educated yourself. You go DADDY YANKEE and be free to express yourself. Knowing a person personally does make a difference. Trust your own judgement.
Daddy Yankee and every one of us is entitled to our own opinion! Leave him alone. This is America, after all!
Thank you Daddy Yankee...as a Republican Latina I am proud of you for standing on your principles. You have won a FAN!!!!
I think Daddy is just not educated on the subject. John McLame might seem like a nice guy when you meet him. Heck, he might even be a nice guy in person, but his policies over the last 3-4 years, have mirrored those of Bush and have hurt the working and middle class. John McCain USED to be a party outsider, but he made a deal with the devil (Bush) in order to have their support. Now he has embraced the Rebulican Right whole heartedly. I don't begrudge someone being successful. Barack and Michelle Obama are both educated, highly intelligent, individuals. It would odd if they weren't successful. That's what we all hope for, - to play the game by the rules and have it pay off for use. But building this country, and sustaining the rich off the backs of brown and black people while keeping them from rising to the next level will have to go. The American dream as republicans see it is for them not us.
There are a lot of misconceptions and outright lies out there related to Obama. If you don't support him for whatever reason that's your right, but don't believe the lies, and don't pass them on as truth. He took a vacation back to Hawaii where he was raised and visited with family. There are NO PRIVATE BEACHES IN HAWAII!!! THEY'RE ALL PUBLIC!!! So the idea of him frolic about on public beaches is a lie!!! Also, remember he and Michelle just recently paid off their college student loans. Also, if you ever looked at their house, you would hardly call it a mansion. Nice house yes, in a nice neighborhood yes, but its and older brick and hardly fits the description of a mansion. If it were located here in my hometown, instead of Chicago it would be worth about $175,000. Nice house yes, mansion, no. Also, the influx of cash that Obama got was money that came from the sale of his books. No private land deals, or windfalls on the stock market. He wrote 2 very popular books. Dreams of my Father, and the Audacity of Hope. Please do a little research before you post things that are not true. If you want to believe lies, that makes you gullible, when pass them on that makes you a liar. Treat lightly.
To Jessica C. comment, Guayabita said it best and I agree...
OMG I used to be one of Daddy Yankee's biggest fans really I truly was but this I can not support he is CRAZEY I value his point of view seeing as to how he has already met Mccain in person but I have a veerrrry strong opinion when it comes to politics and out of all people I would have thought that daddy yankee would agree with me in the fact that Mccain is hopeless in the postion of president and the is totally wrong for the job everything he offers to the public as "KNOWLEDGE" is really stuff that Obama has already covered in many amazing speeches and actions that serve as more than enough as evidence that he truly is a fighter and is willing to not only help the LATINO community but has EVERYONE'S!!!best interests at heart race is no matter to Obama and he has newer and in my opinion better take on things that should be happening in the country where as Mccain is much older and is also part of the party that is very resistant to change failing to realize that with out consistant change this country will fall to pieces. Change and a mix of different people ,cutlure and ideas is what made this country what it is today with out that nothing is going to get fixed and this country can not move forward. OBAMA is the only candidate that has shown potential for a position as president because it seems to me that he clearly understands the things ive described above and will continue to enforce it, embrace it and make it even better so the country can move forward and move toward a better future if daddy yankee cant see this I hope all those other voters out there do so this November make sure you make a vote for a better today but more so for a better tomorrow.VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA THIS FALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dique "un great desire to help our community".. How like Bush has done? Through inflation, raising the overall cost of living and sending more of our men and women to go and get killed in a senseless war. Yea for Daddy its very easy to say he can support McCain cause he doesn't have to struggle daily to make ends meet or to afford a higher education, and even though Obama maybe rich as well im pretty sure that as part of the minority community he has had to struggle excessively to get to the place where he is, so most likely he can relate to the struggle many minorities have to endure, compared to a white rich man who can attain wealth much easier just because of the way he looks and his background. Sorry Daddy pero tu 'ta equivocado and outta touch with what you consider your community if you think a billionaire republican has my well-being in mind, given his party's reputation and practices with our gente
Tashi....you do realize that Barack Obama is rich as well? He is living comfortable in a million dollar mansion in Chicago and just got back from Hawaii with his family and they stayed on a Private Beach. He also made 4 million dollars last year. Most working poor and middle class people will never be able to vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and live in a mansion. Obama is just as out of touch with the working poor and middle class. He might not be as rich as McCain...but he is defiantly living the good life.
