Following a memorable and funny turn as Mark Ruffalo’s friend and lover in last year’s Oscar nominated film, The Kids Are All Right, Brazilian actress Yaya DaCosta has a new role in In Time—a sci-fi thriller about money and immortality—which stars Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried and opens in theaters nationwide this Friday, October 28th.
In the film—which is based on the premise that the rich can live forever, while everyone else tries to negotiate for their immortality—Yaya plays Greta, a woman who's struggling and belongs to the latter group.
Born in Harlem New York, Yaya comes from a multi-ethnic background (she’s Brazilian, West African, Native American/Cherokee and Irish). Beautiful and brainy, she majored in African Studies and International Relations at Brown University, but the stunning Afro-Latina is perhaps best known for being the runner-up on the third season of America’s Next Top Model (2004).
Following her appearance on ANTM, Yaya set her sights on acting. Her first role was a guest spot on the show, Eve in 2005, followed by a starring role in the Antonio Banderas dance flick, Take the Lead. In 2008, Yaya landed the role of Cassandra Foster—the daughter of Angie Hubbard—on the long-running soap, All My Children. And in 2009, she portrayed Nico Slater, the daughter of Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) on ABC’s hit comedy, Ugly Betty.
While Yaya has clearly chosen acting over modeling, there is another career she has her eye on—directing. Noting that roles for minority actors are still few and far between, she says that one day she hopes to be on the other side of the camera "creating more opportunities for everybody." We can't wait!
