Naya Rivera is Vying For Role in 'West Side Story' Remake

Naya Rivera is auditioning for the role of 'Anita' in Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story. The former Glee star posted her audition video on Instagram on Saturday and tagged her agency, saying that the "file was too big to send via email."

The film will be a remake of the hit 1961 musical film about rival New York City gangs that was based on a 1957 Broadway show. Spielberg put out a casting call this past January and expressed his intention to cast Latino actors in the traditional Latino roles. In the video, Rivera performs part of the song "America," a popular song led by the Puerto Rican character.

On Glee, Rivera's character Santana performed Anita's part in a group performance of "America" in a season three West Side Story-themed episode.

Chita Rivera, 85, was the first to bring the iconic role to life in West Side Story on Broadway in 1957. Rita Moreno, 86, played the part in the 1961 movie and won an Academy Award for her supporting role. She was the first Hispanic actress to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
