Happy Birthday Robert Rodriguez! Our 5 Favorite Movies

Happy Birthday Robert Rodriguez! The Mexican American director turns 44 today so we are celebrating by counting down our favorite flicks!

Desperado: The world fell in love with Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in this 1995 action sequel to his flick, Mariachi. The dramatic (and strangely romantic) premise of a mariachi player seeking revenge from a drug lord for killing the love of his life is just plain awesome. The film was also the first introduction the American audience had to Salma and Antonio. Who can forget the infamous bar scene where Antonio’s character pulls guns out of his cuffs and causes bloody hell in Cheech Marin’s bar? Gangster.

From Dusk Till Dawn: True Blood and Twilight may be running the fictional vampire game now, but the horror film written by Quentin Tarantino was one of the best productions featuring blood-sucking demons in the 1990s (of course there’s also the classic drama Interview With the Vampire). Sure, there were a ton of grotesque scenes, but the one that always come to mind is Salma Hayek’s seductive table dance with a snake wrapped around her neck. We wonder how many snakes would like to audition for the sequel…

Once Upon a Time in Mexico: Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek were at it again for the final film of the Mariachi trilogy also joined by Johnny Depp. Johnny’s character Sands may have been awesome as a blind man killing his way to survival, but we love this film for how many Latinos it featured like: Enrique Iglesias, Eva Mendes, Ruben Blades, and Danny Trejo. The film director definitely went out with a bang on this one.

Sin City: The 2005 blockbuster hit based on Frank Miller’s graphic novels is arguably the best comic book adaptation of all time based on its neo-noir style. Starring Benecio del Toro, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, and Alexis Bledel, the movie was loaded with gritty scenes of rape, castration, and murder (of course). We can’t wait for the sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For!

Machete: Danny Trejo isn’t someone to mess with. That’s apparent just minutes into the hit 2010 flick, Machete. The actor, who was ambushed by the man who hired him to kill a Texas Senator, fires back with a massive vengeful attack. Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez are fearless in the action film, which is a triple bonus for us.
