If you loved Ice Age, then you’ll absolutely adore Rio, out this week on DVD. The animated film, helmed by Ice Age director Carlos Saldanha (a native of Rio de Janeiro himself), is one of those movies you can watch with the whole clan—and there aren’t many of those out there! This is the story of the domesticated rare blue macaw Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) who is taken to Rio to mate with the last female bird of his kind, the fiercely independent Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway). When they're both trapped by bird smugglers, they're forced to learn a whole lot about friendship, courage, freedom, and what it really takes to fly.
The movie features the voices of some of our fave Latinos: George Lopez, Rodrigo Santoro, and Carlos Ponce.
With a beautiful scenic backdrop and an amazing soundtrack overseen by none other than 70-year-old legend Sergio Mendes, who described the film as "a celebration of Brazilian life, of Carnival, the nature, the rhythms, the joy, the sensuality,” it stays true to the culture it honors. Our favorite scene has got to be in the Sambódromo—it’s like we’re experiencing the magic of carnaval ourselves!
