Exclusive: Fergie Breaks Down Her Latina Roots

When it comes to Fergie, there’s always been an unresolved question in Latinas’ minds—is she, or isn’t she, one of us? The multi-platinum-selling solo artist is frequently said to be of mixed ethnicity, and she explained it this way herself to the The Independent in 2007: “My heritage is a complete mixture that includes Irish, Scottish and Mexican strains, and I don't feel tied to any one culture.” Hmm…can you say confusing? The fact that Fergie gets down with Daddy Yankee and Los Tigres Del Norte and fronts an uber-multicultural hip-pop group hasn’t really helped to sort out the truth.

Finally, we decided to ask The Dutchess ourselves. Coming off the heels of a show-stopping rendition of “Barracuda” with Heart for American Idol’s charity special, Idol Gives Back (“It was one of my dreams come true,” she gushed), Fergie spoke with Latina.com and happily set the record straight on her roots.

“Yes, I have Mexican in my ancestry,” said Fergie. “My Dad's grandmother was born in Guanajuato. I’m very proud of it; that’s probably where I get my fire! I’m mostly Scottish-Irish, though.”

And when she’s not on the road or in the studio—the star most recently released a collaboration with rapper Nelly called “Party People” and recorded a song for the Sex and the City movie soundtrack—she even visits her great-abuela’s homeland. “Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is my spot,” she said. “I love to hang out by the pool, go fishing, shop for furniture, and I’ve taken painting classes over there. It’s beautiful.”

So, why all the ambiguity around her latinidad before, you might ask? “I don’t go around claiming it big time,” the singer explained, “because there are many more full-bred Latinas that are out there to represent.”

There you have it. Even if you have to go back three generations to trace Fergie’s Latina roots, they do exist. More importantly, the songstress isn’t trying to hide them; she just wants other chicas to get their shine! We love her more already.

Who cares whether Fergie is white, Native American or Mexican. The real issue is the pressure put on latino people to have to hide their heritage in the first place. She is extremely talented whatever her roots and that's all that really matters. Bead suppliers
It's sad that in our society there is so much pressure on people who are latina/o, and have other heritage(s) as well, to portray their identity in such a careful way. They'll get criticized no matter what. If they don't flaunt their latinidad people will question why? Are they trying to hide it or something? If they do flaunt it, they will be criticized for not being authentic enough, and not a 'real' latino/a. club penguin
There are many stars out there that are fully bred, and they will be able to do a good job representing the culture. Get Paid to Take Online Surveys
We are talking jessica alba here not Christina Aguilera, Rosario Dawson, Cameron Diaz so d.go83 the comment you made was just as irrelevant. Economics Dissertation | Business Dissertation | Nursing Dissertation

I don't think Fergie should go around and represent being a Latina when she is not a full bred Latina. There are many stars out there that are fully bred, and they will be able to do a good job representing the culture.
Im Not Full Bred Latina But, I Still Consider MySelf As Hispanic. Why Do Yu Have To Be The Whole Thing To Consider Yourself Whole Hispanic. That Dosn't Make Sense To Me At All. You Can Be 1% Hispanic And Still Be Consider Hispanic Because You Have It In Your Blood And Roots.
fully bread? are you kidding me? what are we- dogs? doesn't everyone deserve the chance to represent themselves and be who they are no matter the technical percentage? we are people...and we should be who we are and allow each other to do the same. what would disappoint me would be if people denied parts of who they are instead of embracing it all and shouting it from the rooftops. this is such a tired mentality you have-shared by racists and 70 year olds who haven't met 2009 yet.
imagine if there were only ONE flavor of ice cream? what a boring world we would live in!! everybody is so mixed with so many different things...i'm puerto rican, irish, mexican and german, and my husband is mexican, german and native american and yet everyone refers to us as "mexican" (we live in so. cal go figure..) i have respect for fergie for saying yes she is latina even if it's a little further down the line..but she also has other roots too. we're all different and yet we're all the race: human race! btw...in the past i've had some haters try and tell me i was "just a white girl" and then i've also had people who called me racial slurs for mexicana...but to me it's like; whatever ethnicity or ethnicities you are, theres never any shame in it because God made each one of us unique and especial! Gracias A Dios! but thanks to Latina for being open in your magazine to feature all different types of Latinas !
@Lindy everybody knows mariah carey is black/spanish/white and alicia keys is black(jamican) and her mother is italian(white) and @creolesoul its a fact that creoles are a multiethnic race of peole their are mostly black/white/spanish/native american and french creoles for example beyonce has some creole ancestry one of her grandparents are french creole the other black/native american creole alot of people are mixed some way or another but people kill me when just because they have grandparents 5 and 6 generations down the line that are white or black or asian or whtever dosent mean they are depending on the racial backgroung of your parents and so on ans so fourth bloodlines start to diminsh so its not a positive fact that just because your family has certain ethnic roots down the line somewhere dosent mean u share those same ethnic roots my friend her ancestors are black native american asian and white but her mom is black and her dad is black/mexican since her grand mother her great great grandmother and her great great great grand mother all married black and mexican men as the cycle goes on the white/nativeamerican and asian blood lines deminish so she considers herself black and mexican
