Exclusive: Fergie Breaks Down Her Latina Roots

When it comes to Fergie, there’s always been an unresolved question in Latinas’ minds—is she, or isn’t she, one of us? The multi-platinum-selling solo artist is frequently said to be of mixed ethnicity, and she explained it this way herself to the The Independent in 2007: “My heritage is a complete mixture that includes Irish, Scottish and Mexican strains, and I don't feel tied to any one culture.” Hmm…can you say confusing? The fact that Fergie gets down with Daddy Yankee and Los Tigres Del Norte and fronts an uber-multicultural hip-pop group hasn’t really helped to sort out the truth.

Finally, we decided to ask The Dutchess ourselves. Coming off the heels of a show-stopping rendition of “Barracuda” with Heart for American Idol’s charity special, Idol Gives Back (“It was one of my dreams come true,” she gushed), Fergie spoke with Latina.com and happily set the record straight on her roots.

“Yes, I have Mexican in my ancestry,” said Fergie. “My Dad's grandmother was born in Guanajuato. I’m very proud of it; that’s probably where I get my fire! I’m mostly Scottish-Irish, though.”

And when she’s not on the road or in the studio—the star most recently released a collaboration with rapper Nelly called “Party People” and recorded a song for the Sex and the City movie soundtrack—she even visits her great-abuela’s homeland. “Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is my spot,” she said. “I love to hang out by the pool, go fishing, shop for furniture, and I’ve taken painting classes over there. It’s beautiful.”

So, why all the ambiguity around her latinidad before, you might ask? “I don’t go around claiming it big time,” the singer explained, “because there are many more full-bred Latinas that are out there to represent.”

There you have it. Even if you have to go back three generations to trace Fergie’s Latina roots, they do exist. More importantly, the songstress isn’t trying to hide them; she just wants other chicas to get their shine! We love her more already.

Of course this is an American thing. This country is relatively new in comparison to other countries so we are still dealing with this great melting pot known as America. And the comment about LOOKING Latina was just completely idiotic. No one LOOKS Latina. I'm blonde with European features but I AM LATINA.
Texmexgirl I'm glad that Fergie is not denying her several degrees of seperation from the Latina culture unlike others that look more latina than Fergie and are not proud of it... Fergie, you rock!!
I disagree with many of the comments posted. If you were born in the United States or Canada (or any other country for that matter) it makes you a citizen of that country. It is your heritage who defines you. There is no reason to not be proud where your ancestors have come from. It is the fact that many individuals are ashamed of their heritage. It has nothing to do with speaking Spanish or putting pressure on anyone. It has everything to do with celebrating our uniqueness and culture.
'Hello Ladies, I agree with mostly everyone's comments thus far. I was born in the Dominican Republic and currently live in the US, obviously I don't have any identity issues. What I don't understand is this need to prove that so and so is Latina, like Fergie said there's already PLENTY of Latina talent out there representing. I do think that this is a US thing like another member pointed out. Lets just enjoy someones talent without being so worried to know where they come from. I already know that my home land has bred many many talented and smart people I don't need to prove it to anyone else!

I think it's sad that in our society there is so much pressure on people who are latina/o, and have other heritage(s) as well, to portray their identity in such a careful way. They'll get criticized no matter what. If they don't flaunt their latinidad people will question why? Are they trying to hide it or something? If they do flaunt it, they will be criticized for not being authentic enough, and not a 'real' latino/a.
Hola todos. i live in Canada, i was born in Canada, but i'm also latina, i know how Fergie feels, and even Jessica Alba. I never came out with my latinidad till lately because i felt like the 3 or 4 generations back in my family didn't really effect me, they were born in those countries not me... but i was too proud of mi latinidad.. pero cuando eres... Nicaraguan, Borinquena, Y argentine... es dificil.. mi familia es complicado.. Y .. i couldn't explain it to everyone.. not only that i'm german too... so many different paises. o sea.. soy representando para todos mi paises con orgulla. ** "put yahh L's up high."
What is the big deal or all the fuss about ´being latina´, being 1/5 latina or whatever.. I dont get the big deal... I dont see whats the issue.. Well i am not from us and never have been there, maybe its a US thing, because here in colombia nobody cares....
For the small amount of Latina that she is Fergie has most likely not grown up in the Latin culture. I have always admired her for being proud but not being over spoken. I'm tired of seeing everyone is 1/16 Latin trying to jump on the bandwagon to make more money with the Latin market. Its one thing to be proud and another to use whatever you can to make a buck. I am proud to be Latina but I am a person first.
If your even an ounce of being a Latina you need to speak of it. Your denying yourself if you dont represent.
