MTV VMAs 2013 Nominees for Best Latino Artist

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards are this Sunday! We've rounded up the five nominees for Best Latino Artist -- check 'em out:

1. MTV VMAs Noms: Don Omar

Don Omar

The "Danza Kuduro" singer, often referred to as El Rey, has been on the music scene since 1999 (although his first album wasn't released until 2003). His first studio album -- The Last Don -- went platinum and sold over one million copies worldwide. In 2003, he was awarded Latin Pop Album of the Year and New Artist & Latin Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Omar's 2006 album, King of Kings, became the highest ranking reggaeton LP on the top 10 U.S. charts in history. In 2007, Omar received the Latin Billboard award for Reggaeton Album of the Year for King of Kings. The album was recognized by Billboard as the most successful album of the decade in Latin America, aside from being the most successful in the history of the reggaeton genre.

His album, Don Omar Presents MTO2: The New Generation, was released on May 1, 2012 and won the award for Best Urban Music Album at the 2012 Latin Grammy Awards. It has also been a top seller on iTunes. This year Omar received 10 winning nominations at the Billboard Latin Music Awards.


2. MTV VMAs Noms: Daddy Yankee

El Cangri made his first musical appearance on the 1990 DJ Playero mixtape, Playero 34. His first official solo studio album, No Mercy, was released in 1995. But it wasn't until 2002's ElCangri.com that Yankee saw international sucess. In 2004, Yankee's Barrio Fino album debuted and it received numerous awards including: Lo Nuestro Awards and a Latin Billboard Award. The album also received nominations for a Latin Grammy and MTV Video Music Award, and sold over two million copies worldwide.

In 2006, El Cangri was named one of the 100 most influential people by Time magazine. Yankee's sixth studio album, Prestige, was released in September 2012. Prestige's first single "Ven Conmigo," featured Prince Royce and peaked at #9 on the Latin Billboard charts. The album peaked at #39 on the Billboard 200.

Daddy Yankee was recently honored during the 2013 Premios Tu Mundo with the award for "Poder Musical."


3. MTV VMAs Noms: Pitbull

Mr. Worldwide has definitely become an international phenomenon! The singer released his debut album, M.I.A.M.I., in 2004. His lead single, "Culo," peaked at #32 on the Billboard 100 chart. He co-founded Bad Boy Latino in 2005 with Sean "Diddy" Combs.

Pitbull's fourth studio album, Rebelution, featured hits "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" and "Krazy." "Krazy" peaked at #30 on the Hot 100 and "I Know You Want Me" peaked at #2. "I Know You Want Me" ended at #17 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 2009. Later that year, the Cubano launched his own label, Mr. 305 Inc.

In addition to his solo success, Pitbull has been featured on various artists' songs, and thanks to his magic -- these songs often become chart topping hits! Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor" became a certified hit and debuted at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. This became the highest debuting Hot 100 single of Lopez's career.


4. MTV VMAs Noms: Alejandro Sanz

Alejandro Sanz

The 44-year-old cantante, who is globally known for his hit "Corazon Partio," has been making waves in the music industry since 1989. His debut album, Los Chulos Son Pa' Cuidarlos, fused techno and flamenco but was widely criticized.

Sanz's fifth studio album, Mas, stayed on the Billboard Latin Album charts for 74 weeks. According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, this album "made Sanz an international star on the strength of the pop-salsa hit 'Corazon Partío', a song on the lips of fans from Spain to Cuba and the United States."

At the 2001 Latin Grammy Awards, the singer took home four awards: Best Pop Male Vocal Album and Album of the Year for El Alma al Aire, and Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the title track from the album. In 2004, he won four Latin Grammys for his album No Es Lo Mismo. His latest album, La Musica No Se Toca, landed on the #1 spot of Billboard's Latin Pop Album chart.


5. MTV VMAs Noms: Jesse and Joy

Jesse & Joy

The Mexican brother and sister pop-rock duo debuted in 2005. In 2007, these talented siblings won a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist, and were nominated for Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocals for their album, Esta Es Mi Vida. At the 2012 Latin Grammys, Jesse & Joy snagged four awards, including Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Pop Album, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. And in 2013 they took home a Grammy for  Best Latin Pop Album.
