Selena Gomez Weighs In on 'Sofia The First' Controversy (EXCLUSIVE)

A few months ago, it seemed like everyone had an opinion about the Sofia the First controversy involving Disney's latest Princess.

Perhaps Disney's most famous young Latina actress ever - Selena Gomez has a different stance on the topic. The pop singer and actress says the network's decision to make Sofia of mixed-heritage and not of any real-world culture belongs to Disney -- even if some people will question it.

“Obviously, I do think it's important. People should capitalize on if it is Latina, if it is whatever they're trying to portray – their culture, people should be proud of it," Gomez told Latina.com recently on the set of her reunion episode for Wizards of Waverly Place, which airs early this year.

"Whatever they create is what they create. It may disappoint people, it may not," Gomez said. “But to each their own. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. That's not my place [to comment].”

Sofia the First was originally billed as Disney's first Latina princess character due to confusion in October 2012, when news reports identified the show's cultural influences from Spain as being part of the fictional characters' actual identities.

What do you think about Selena’s comments?
