'American Idol' Recap: Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj "Gel Well in a Weird Crazy Way"

It was all about Mean Girls, Idol trivia, and a mix of stellar and laughable performers on the season premiere of American Idol last night. New York was in the building as thousands of contestants lined up to impress new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, and Idol veteran, Randy Jackson.

As the auditions got worse, it seemed as though Nicki’s British accent kept getting stronger and stronger while Mimi quoted lines from the comedy starring Lindsay Lohan. There was the guy in the plastic “Thriller” inspired costume and curly wig that sang Boyz II Men's “I’ll Make Love To You” and included a special thrust just for the ladies – yuck. Let's just say they weren't into it. Nor were they into the dude who has auditioned seven times and claims to know 'everything' about the show. "I think it's time to move on," said Mariah. Um, yeah.

After watching a handful of questionable auditions, Ashlee Feliciano belted out a flawless rendition of Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On” that almost blew Nicki’s neon yellow wig off. “So pretty. So I wanna come to your show. I don't think you understand what you just did,” she said.

Mariah also added, “I thought everything was nice and clear. You know, the potential is great. It was beautiful. You should be really proud of yourself.” Randy was also impressed with Ashlee’s family for taking care of special needs children. He invited all of them to come in and share the spotlight. It was a sweet moment, and we totally think this Latina is going to go far in the competition.

Sure, Mariah and Nicki’s diva attitudes kept getting sprinkled into the episode (especially when Nicki called her a B), but we have to admit that due to the miracles of video editing, it was kept pretty tame. Towards the end, the hip-hop artist admitted, “I feel like we gel well in a weird crazy way.” Mimi nodded with insincere approval and gave a semi-smile. We will see what Chicago stirs up tonight!
