'American Idol' Recap: Matheus Fernandes Leaves Mariah Carey in Tears

Texas and California sure delivered doses of Latino talent during last night’s episode of American Idol. The usual cattiness between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj took the backburner for one of the best episodes of the 12th season, which was abruptly stopped for a fire drill.

As they say, the show must go on and one of our favorite contestants was Texan, Victoria Acosta. The mariachi singer sang a B-level rendition of “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie, which left Keith Urban feeling like something was missing. Randy Jackson then asked her to belt out some mariachi verses, which left the entire panel in awe. Yes, this Latina is going to Hollywood!

However, Brian Martinez wasn’t as fortunate. The shaky contestant claimed that an Idol producer told him to audition after he heard him sing in a public bathroom. Sorry, but who lied to him? Martinez sang, “You’ll Be In My Heart,” and left all of the judges cringing. “This experience wasn’t a positive one for me,” he said. At least he was slapped with reality, no?

Finally, the contestant who stole our hearts and left us in tears was Matheus Fernandes. The Idol hopeful opened up about being picked on for his height disadvantage. Once he hit the stage, he declared, “Great things come in small packages.” Boy was he right! After singing Same Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Fernandes left Mariah in tears. Yes, he is a crooner in the making!
