Up-and-Coming Latina Actress Emilia McCarthy Talks New Netflix Series ‘Hemlock Grove’

S. Markus Mathurin

Netflix is banking on its success of House of Cards with the new release of the thriller show Hemlock Grove. The series debuts Friday April 19 and, in true Netflix fashion, releases season one all at once.  Centering on a town searching for a killer (or a killer beast) after a brutal murder of a young girl, Mexican beauty Emilia McCarthy plays Alyssa Sworn, one of the daughters of the sheriff. Check out what she had to say about the series, Gael Garcia Bernal, and what happens when she tells others she’s Latina.

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in London, Ontario, Canada, which is also where Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams are from! (Something I like to brag about.) Even though I was raised in Canada, my background is also Mexican, as my mom is originally from Mexico City!

Any favorite Latin traditions?

The food! The dancing! I love it all.

What are your favorite foods?

I love everything from enchiladas and chilaquiles to a good A&W burger with fries.

What inspired you to become an actress?

Literally one day I woke up and was like, mom, dad, I want to be an actress. Then it sort of just happened.

Do you speak Spanish?

Of course! Fluently, thanks to my mom.

You have light hair and eyes, something that’s not stereotypically seen as Latina (unfortunately). Even though we know Latinas don’t look “one way,” what do other say when you tell them you’re Latina?

They say, “ya right!” They don’t believe me! Not until I start speaking really fast in Spanish to them. Then they’re like “okay, okay I believe you, stop.”
