Invading Your TV: Our Favorite Latina Sci-Fi Queens!

In TNT's new sci-fi series, Falling Skies (premiering Sunday at 9/8c), Mexican actress Seychelle Gabriel stars as Lourdes, a pre-med student who works in a makeshift hospital helping wounded people and conducting scientific experiments. Seychelle's hot new role in this drama (produced by Steven Spielberg) got us thinking about our favorite Latina sci-fi queens.

1. SciFi Stars: Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba in Dark Angel (2000-2002)

She was nearly 18 when James Cameron cast the Mexican American beauty in the breakout role of her career, Max Guevara, a genetically enhanced super-soldier created Frankenstein-style in a secret government lab known as Manticore, who tries to have some semblance of a normal life.

2. SciFi Stars: Morena Baccarin

Morena Baccarin in V (2009- 2011)

Before she was trying to gain control of planet earth as Anna, the manipulative leader of the visitors on ABC’s V, Brazilian actress Morena Baccarin was already well known in sci-fi circles as Inara Serra, a courtesan licensed by the Union of Allied Planets in Joss Whedon’s Firefly, and the villain Adria, a genetically advanced human infused with Ori knowledge on Stargate SG-1

3. SciFi Stars: Charisma Carpenter

Charisma Carpenter in Buffy the Vampire Slayer  (1996-1999)

When Spanish actress Charisma Carpenter first auditioned for the WB show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she wanted the role of Buffy, the show’s title character. The role ended up going to Sarah Michelle Gellar, but the show’s executive producer Joss Whedon was so enamoured with Charisma that he asked her to read for the part of Cordelia Chase, a snobby and popular high school student with entitlement issues. Charisma injected so much, um, charisma into the part that we ended up falling in love with her character, and as the show went on, Cordelia became a more sensitive and sweet person that we could all root for. When Buffy’s high school years came to an end, Whedon asked Charisma to join his Buffy spinoff Angel, which she starred on from 1999-2004.

4. SciFi Stars: Gina Torres

Gina Torres in Firefly (2002-2003)

You might remember Gina Torres as Anna Espinosa, Sydney Bristow’s (Jennifer Garner) evil nemesis on Alias (2001-2006), but this Cuban actress is best known for her role as Zoë Washburne, a loyal warrior aboard the spaceship Serenity, in Firefly. How deep does Gina’s love for all things sci-fi go? Well, she happens  to be married to Laurence Fishburne, star of one of the most successful sci-fi movie franchises of all time,  The Matrix. Coincidence?  We think not.

5. SciFi Stars: Majandra Delfino

Majandra Delfino in Roswell (1999-2002)

Venezuelan actress Majandra Delfino is best known for playing Maria Deluca, a talented musician who learns that there are aliens around her and becomes their confidante when the aliens realize she is willing to keep their identity a secret. Maria was spontaneous and quirky, but she was also a loyal friend.
