Sabrina Bryan is a force to be reckoned with on this season's Dancing With the Stars All-Stars. The half-Mexican star and her professional partner, Louis Van Amstel, managed to score the first 9 of the season earlier in the competition. After week three, the couple currently holds a 25.5 average and are looking to impress judge, Carrie Ann Inaba, who pushed for more fire from Sabrina after her paso doble.
We spoke to the 28-year-old about how she taps into her inner diva, what she loves about being Latina, and more! Read our exclusive interview below:
Why did you want to come back for the all-star season of DWTS?
“I’m looking for redemption for my fans, for sure! I feel like I left too soon the first time around. I find that this show offers the perfect balance between really pushing yourself to the limit and also having a great time doing it. The minute they asked me, I knew I wanted to come on board again.”
You are also a professionally trained dancer. Do you find that that gives you more confidence on the dance floor?
“I think it helps me be more comfortable with the crowd. My background in dancing helps a little bit, but I’ve never done Latin or ballroom dancing at a competitive level. I feel like that element adds a whole different kind of pressure. There are a lot of people you are trying to please – not just the panel of judges. It’s a lot more challenging than anything I have ever done.”
Last week after your paso doble, Carrie Ann Inaba mentioned that she wants you to mix things up a little. What do you and Louis Van Amstel have in store for tonight?
“The era of the disco was such a fun time, so I plan on letting loose and being myself. This is my first time performing in this genre so to me it’s all about being free. I want to bring my personality to it and impress Carrie Ann this week. She gave me great constructive criticism, so I just want to wow her this week!”
How do you tap into your inner diva on the dance floor?
“That’s what I love about Louis. He has really pulled that side out of me. He encourages me to be in the moment and to pace myself on the dance floor. His tip is to smile with your eyes. Kind of the saying Tara Banks has on her show. He’s such an awesome trainer! He has taught me so much on so many levels.”
How do you feel about the comparison between you and Shawn Johnson?
“Shawn is amazing! You know we are short, blonde, and the younger ones in the cast. We have our own fan base, which brings flavor to the competition. We love hanging out and we call each other twins. It’s funny because at one point they combined our names and said, ‘I’m here with Shawn Bryan.’ It was so funny!”
What do you love about being Latina?
“For me, it’s the way that we bring family together. One of my favorite times of year is around Christmas when my entire family gets together and we make tamales together. It’s a full two-day event and we create an assembly line. It’s awesome because everyone has his or her own part in making the dish. It’s so much fun. No one can beat that.”
Where do you want to be in your career in the next five years?
"I definitely want to continue acting and performing. I've also gotten into producing and would love to start something from the ground up. It's like starting a business so that takes time. I really want to do it the right way so I'm taking my time with it."
Watch DWTS tonight at 8pm on ABC and be sure to vote for Sabrina Bryan!
