Top UK Doctors Blast "Ugly Betty"

ABC

Ugly Betty has come under fire recently and not for stereotyping glasses, braces and a bad fashion choices as nerdy, but for the unrealistic portrayal of Betty's orthodontics.

Specialists at the British Orthodontic Society said makers of the hit show Ugly Betty are “irresponsible” because the US comedy provides a “detrimental” portrayal of wire braces. According to dentists, these kinds of metal braces are very seldom recommended for adults and even in the most extreme cases shouldn't worn for more than two years. Betty's been rocking hers since September 28, 2006 when the show premiered!

British orthodontists say they are worried the show might discourage young viewers from seeking corrective dental treatment. But Ugly Betty is obviously a caricature, a goofy wannabe trying to make it in the big bad world of fashion and glamor, for our viewing pleasure. Its unlikely kids watching the show will be turned off to braces just because of Betty, we're guessing they're in on the joke—the fact that braces are painful, unsightly and prevent you from chewing gum, now that’s another story.
