Leave it to Christian Louboutin to be the inspiration for the number one track on the Billboard Top 100. Known for his red-lacquered soles, the French designer is quite familiar with giving women around the world shoe-gasm – including Cardi B.
That's why we weren't surprised when the 24-year-old rapper gave a nod to the iconic shoe in her break out single "Bodak Yellow": “These expensive, these is red bottoms/ These is bloody shoes/ Hit the store, I can get ’em both/ I don’t wanna choose.”
But what exactly does the Louboutin think about Cardi B's reference to his infamous stilettos? Well, in a recent interview with the New York Times, the shoe designer revealed he knew very little about the former Love & Hip Hop star. “She has the hair like that? She’s a rapper? This ‘Yellow’ song?” the designer said, adding, “I don’t know much more than that, to be honest.”
While the designer did admit he “not a big rap person," he appreciated Cardi B's love for his shoes as a performer. “In a way, it comes back to some of my origins...The first shoes I ever designed were for showgirls, people on stage. Showgirls have a kind of attitude—they’re driving forces.”
In a recent interview with Billboard, the star's stylist Kollin Carter talked about Cardi's droll-worthy Louboutin collection. “She has to have over 90 pairs. She usually buys a pair or two every couple of weeks,” Carter said back in September. “Before ‘Bodak’ blew up, she wore red bottoms because that’s what it means to make it in the Bronx. It’s a status symbol that the masses can relate to; everyday girls work hard and save up their money to have that shoe. Cardi did the same.”
With rumors about the Bronx beauty collaborating with Steve Madden, let's hope we'll start hearing about an exclusive collection with the French designer himself.
