Francisco Costa attended the 2009 National Design Award with the striking Eva Mendes on his arm. The dashing lead designer of Calvin Klein won the award for fashion design, beating out finalists Rodarte and Thom Browne. Conceived by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, the awards honor the best each year in American design, from products to fashion to architecture.

Nicole Richie has designed a new clothing line—dubbed Winter Kate, after her 21-month-old daughter Harlow's two middle names—which will showcase both a children's collection and a contemporary collection for women. The line will debut in the spring of 2010, but Nicole says she feels as though her whole career has been heading in this direction for quite some time.

Maybe teen starlet Selena Gomez had too much free time on her hands. The Disney actress and lead singer of Selena Gomez and The Scene has decided to branch out into fashion with the start of her own line, WWD reports. Gomez, 17, teamed up with former Generra designer Tony Melillo and Sandra Campos to create Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez.

Brian Reyes’s take on fashion for spring of 2010 was a true mixture of dark and light. Although there was a lot of black on display, most of the darker pieces were made using lighter-than-air, sheer fabrics and maintained a feminine edge with fluttery sleeves.

Not only were the designs of the Spanish label fringy, carnival-festive, daring and fun, but the beautiful variations of skin tones on the runway made a gorgeous rainbow to behold. Cheers, Custo!
