After getting kind of a bad rap for a menu lacking healthy options, Taco Bell has stepped up their game with their new “cantina” menu with fresher ingredients put together by chef Lorena Garcia. Their new cantina bowl packs a healthy punch with black beans, guacamole, corn, salsa, and cilantro rice. The tasty bowl is available with chicken (560 calories), steak (550 calories), or vegetarian (540 calories).
McDonald’s has made an effort in the recent years to add more healthy items to their menu, including items such as apple dippers (100 calories) and yogurt parfaits (160 calories). If you are a fan of this fast food chain the best approach is watching your portions so you can actually eat the good stuff. You can easily order a hamburger (250 calories) and a small order of fries (230 calories) for a meal that’s less than 500 calories.
Wendy’s is one of the few fast food chains that offers a ton of healthier meal options. Their Apple Pecan Chicken Salad (520 calories with dressing) is yummy, and their large chili (355 calories) is good and filling – both perfect for lunch.
Carl’s Jr. is known for more than their racy commercials- the chain also offers a pretty tasty six-dollar burger. For those of you that are watching your carbs, the low-carb version is a good option, served on a lettuce bun with 6 carbs and 5 grams of sugar. If you are watching your calorie intake, go for one of their low-calorie turkey burgers, all under 500 calories.
Chipotle may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re thinking of fast food, but the healthy chain (that builds a business on fresh ingredients), definitely counts since you get your food nice and quick! While everything at chipotle is decently healthy, the burrito bowl seems to be the way to go. If you are looking for an option that’s around 550 calories try this combo: brown rice, black beans, fajita vegetables, salsa, cheese, and sour cream. If you’re not afraid of adding a few more calories, top it off with guacamole, which is full of good, healthy fats.
Starbucks may be your one-stop-shop for a good cup of joe, but the popular coffee chain has been offering food items (and some tasty ones at that!). Their turkey bacon sandwich (320 calories) is perfect for breakfast, and if you’re looking for something later in the day, go for the chipotle chicken wraps box (290 calories) or the goat cheese and garden veggie box (220 calories).
Burger King is more than just the home of the whopper. This national chain has offered many healthier options in the last few years that will help keep your waistline in check. Some good options include: Macaroni and cheese (160 calories), Apple “fries” (70 calories), Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich (470 calories), or the BK Single Stacker (380 calories).
