Staff Health Challenge: A Lifelong Promise

This health challenge has opened my eyes up to what I can accomplish when I put my mind to something. It has also made it clear what my weaknesses are (mainly wine and chocolate, in that order). But the most important thing I've learned through this process is that health and fitness isn't just a 90 day project, it's a lifelong commitment—just like marriage.

When I am active and working out, I feel better about myself and have more energy to tackle all of the things I love to do. Before when I would start a workout routine I would get so down on myself if I missed one session. I'd freak out and just quit because I wasn't following a plan to "perfection." Now, if I miss a day here or there, I know it's not the end of the world, because after all, no one's perfect! I've also realized that there are a million little ways you can fit exercise into your daily life, from getting off at an earlier subway exit and walking the extra distance to work, to going for a run with the dog.

Sure, I love wine and chocolate, and I may let myself indulge every now and then, but it's the exception to the rule, not the norm. I have a heightened awareness of what I put in my body and the effects it has. The less processed my food is, and the more I think about what has gone into making it, the wiser my food choices become. This mindfulness is something I never possessed before I started this challenge.

Sometimes it's really hard, and sometimes I hate it, but I gotta just keep on keeping on, because I've made an important commitment: to myself and to my health.

Two things I never regret doing after I'm done: working out and volunteering. it is a lifelong commitment. And that's why people fail at diets and working out. They give themselves a time frame. The time frame shouldn't be how long you have before you're done. It should be how long you have to get used to your new lifestyle. Thanks for the article and GREAT JOB!
Very true, well said...it's a long time effort commitment for all of us mujeres!
