China provides two critical services to the United States. It is a major underwriter of U.S. debt and it is our major supplier of sex toys. According to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, at the end of 2005, China had $820 billion in U.S. Treasury assets, the second-largest holder of U.S. debt after Japan. The Shanghai Star estimated that China, in 2004, accounted for 70 percent of global sex products -- one can only imagine that its share of the U.S. market is about the same.
