Celebs React to Repeal of Prop 8 in California

Yesterday, a Federal judge overturned the controversial Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage that defined marriage solely as a partnership between a man and woman. The ban was passed in California back in 2008. In ruling that the ban violated the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples, U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker wrote, "Proposition 8 both unconstitutionally burdens the exercise of the fundamental right to marry and creates an irrational classification on the basis of sexual orientation."

Celebs and citizens who support same sex marriage celebrated the victory for the LGBTQ community. Ricky Martin, who came out in an open letter posted to his website this past Spring tweeted: "YEAHHHHH!!!!! #PROP8UNCONSTITUTIONAL MOVING FORWARD!!!!!!!"

Michelle Rodriguez supported the move as well, albeit not as enthusiastically, "Prop 8 seems to have been overturned in California," she wrote on Twitter, "One step for democracy one giant leap towards humanity."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa also spoke out in support of the ruling, tweeting, "This is a historic moment, but we can't rest now. We must keep fighting until all Californians have equal rights." He later followed that up with: "Prop 8 wasn't just unconstitutional, it was un-Californian."

Even the Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger got in on the action, saying in a formal statement: "For the hundreds of thousands of Californians in gay and lesbian households ... this decision affirms the full legal protections and safeguards I believe everyone deserves. Today's decision is by no means California's first milestone, nor our last, on America's road to equality and freedom for all people."

Tell us, what do you think of the overturning of Prop 8?
