Colombian Soccer Team Members Found Murdered in Venezuela

At least 10 members of an amateur Colombian soccer team were kidnapped and found shot to death in Tachira, a town on the border between Venezuela and Colombia, Reuters reports. Venezuelan Vice President Ramon Carrizalez told reporters the athletes were on their side of the border. One team member survived the attack, and another player is still missing.

The athletes, who worked as local traders, were captured on Oct. 11 and found dead on Oct. 25. Carrizalez said the deaths were related to Colombia's internal conflict. He gave no further details.

Kidnappings and armed disputes are a huge problem on both sides of the Venezuelan/ Colombian border, where Colombian guerrilla groups, paramilitary militia and criminal gangs all operate.

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez recently broke off relations with Colombia and minimized trade earlier this year due to Colombia's acceptance of U.S. military bases on its soil. The murder of the soccer players will only further complicate the relationship between the two countries.
