Did You Watch "Latino in America" on CNN Last Night?

Latino in America

Part one of Soledad O'Brien's new documentary series Latino in America aired last night. In it she focused on the story of Latinos who share the last name Garcia, which has become the eighth most popular last name in the United States.

In part one, O'Brien highlights the stories of the many Garcias who represent the largest Latino population in the world outside of Mexico, found right here in America. From lawyers to illegal immigrants to those of struggling to hold on to their culture and pass language and customs on to their children, O'Brien managed to cover a wide breath of the Latino experience in the first part of her series. But we want to know what you think.

It only half addressed the problems of Latin@s in America. It did not fully address the problem of economics in the country that affect us, it did not fully address the fact that people in Latin@ families may be unlikely to go on to hire education, but not necessarily because of their families but because school systems fail them earlier on. After all, what does it say to people belonging to a lower SES that their schools don't receive funding because of performance (and perform poorly because of a lack of resources)?
I thought it was great....I will watch second part tonight.

I watched Thursday night and was expecting to be very critical of it, but I was surprised by the balanced presentation. I felt the documentary really captured the diversity of the Latino experience in the United States. I also had no idea about what was going in in Shenandoah, and found the coverage of the case there very enlightening. It's so sad to see such racism still alive and well in the U.S., but it's important that we know the reality of what it out there and what people really think. I also really like Soledad O'Brien, she did a great job!
Yes, I thought it was a great documentary that addressed the problems of Latinos in America. I will watch the second part tonight. -Nikki-
