Gay Marriage: HRC Red Equal Sign Goes Viral on Facebook

As the Supreme Court hears arguments to decide the fate of marriage equality, including the fate of Proposition 8, which outlawed same-sex marriages in California, a number of Facebook users have changed their profile pictures to a red image featuring an equal sign. But what's this all about?

Turns out, it's the red version of the Human Rights Campaign logo, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. The group posted the red logo on its Facebook page Tuesday morning and called for others to adopt the image in support of marriage equality.

"Make sure you wear red to show your support for marriage equality. And make your Facebook profile red too!" The HRC has over 1 million Facebook followers, and by that afternoon the post had been shared more than 45,000 times and has received over 13,000 "likes."

Mashable states that the campaign gained considerably after the Star Trek actor George Takei took on the logo as his profile picture as well. Many other Facebook pages, in support of the initiative, changed their logos to that of the HRC's, and called out for their fans to do the same.
