Cloverhill Bakery, the Swiss bun maker for McDonald's, is left scrambling to find more employees after their Chicago bakery was swept up in an immigration raid.
According to Bloomberg, 800 immigrants without sufficient documentation were affected, forcing the bakery to replace one-third of their employees. “It’s proceeding very, very slowly because it’s like having a brand new factory and a brand new workforce,” Kevin Toland, Chief Executive Officer, said. “That’s presenting a lot of challenges, as you can imagine.”
The workers were provided by an employment agency that is said to have faced federal audits earlier this year, as reported by Bloomberg.
Following Donald Trump's presidential victory there has been an increase in immigration crackdowns in the country. Cloverhill is one of the biggest occurrences reported by a European company thus far.
