After his struggle with cancer, Hugo Chavez’s life ended from a massive heart attack.
According to CBS News, the head of Venezuela's presidential guard delivered the news late Wednesday, adding that the late president mouthed his desire to live.
“He couldn't speak but he said it with his lips... ‘I don't want to die. Please don't let me die,’ because he loved his country, he sacrificed himself for his country,” Gen. Jose Ornella told The Associated Press. Ornella, who spoke to reporters outside the military academy where Chavez's body lay in state, said he spent the last two years with the late Chavez, who was 58 when he died on March 5.
On the eve of Chavez’s death, the Venezuelan government reported that its leader had suffered a severe new respiratory infection. Chavez underwent his fourth cancer surgery in Cuba on Dec. 11, but the government had been very hush-hush about his disease in general.
Ornella did say that the late Chavez had “the best” doctors from all over the world.
“He suffered a lot,” the general said.
