Must-Try Recipe: Chef Alex Garcia's Hanger Steak Enchiladas

Amigos, located in Morningside Heights, New York City, is one of those authentic Mexican spots that’s the perfect blend of good food and great ambiance. The whimsical setting consists of colorful lights, hanging animal decorations, Día de los Muertos paintings, and various tchotchkes, while shark, whale, and mermaid cocktail embellishments decorate the glassware. 

Alex Garcia is the man responsible for the cuisine in the cocina, but don’t let the restaurant’s playful atmosphere fool you—there’s some serious nuevo Latino cooking going on in the back. Although Garcia created the original menu at Amigos, there’s a rotating crop of celebrity chefs that drop by every now and then to don the chef’s hat. Aaron Sanchez, Adrien Leon, Roberto Santibanez, and many more have all been known to whip up a few delicious entrees on any given night.

While the burritos, tacos, and fajitas are always a good choice, the Braised Short Rib Sopes, Pineapple and Pomegranate Guacamole, and Mexican Corn on the Cob with Chipotle Cream and Queso Fresco also pleased our palates. The #1 winner is definitely the Slow Roasted Hanger Steak Enchiladas with Rajas Poblanos, Queso Chihuahua Morita Chile Salsa, and Crema Nata, however. Do not leave without ordering this dish.
