On last night’s Dancing With the Stars, part-Salvadorian J.R. Martinez delivered a performance that got audience members on their feet—and moved him to tears. The 28-year-old soldier-turned-actor and the other show contestants were challenged to choose a song to perform to that reflected the most memorable year in their lives. During a 2003 deployment in Iraq, Martinez suffered burns that covered 40 percent of his body after driving a Humvee over a landmine.

For J.R. Martinez, drama is an occupation – and a part of his past. The 28-year-old actor stars in the ABC soap, All My Children. A large part of Martinez’s face is scarred, which serve as clues to a life-altering accident he had while serving in the U.S. Army years ago.
