Global superstar Manu Chao opened up about his childhood and his early roots in music in this week’s episode of National Public Radio’s Alt. Latino program. The 50-year-old global superstar was raised in France by Spanish parents who fled their country to avoid the dictatorship of late Francisco Franco. As a kid, Chao would play ride bicycles, play in the woods, and play sports with friends. “I was lucky for sure,” Chao said when he described his childhood.

Global superstar Manu Chao never ceases to amaze me. For the past five years he’s been working with La Colifata, a Buenos Aires–based radio station run out of a psychiatric hospital that uses media as therapy. “With the help of a few friends, the patients decided to launch this radio station to express themselves. To relieve everything they have inside, and to speak to the world,” the singer has said.

While visiting Mexico City during the Guadalajara Film Festival last week, Manu Chao made some statements concerning the 2006 uprising that occurred in San Salvador Atenco, a town just a few miles north east of the capital. Referring to a protest by flower-sellers against a local commercial development—which was met by fierce resistance by the Mexican police and fueled riots—the singer told journalists, "What happened in Atenco was, in some way, state terrorism."
